Benefits of Stretching

Everyone knows how important exercise is, as well as the importance of stretching before and after exercise. But that doesn't mean that we always do it! If you are willing to take the time to do anything, be sure to take the time to stretch. It is considered by many to be the most important form of exercise, and it requires no equipment and no special wardrobe.

One of the many benefits of stretching is increased flexibility, which allows for improved balance and easier movement. Stretching can also help relieve low-back pain, reduce stiffness and soreness, and improve posture, athletic performance, and agility. Regular stretching also promotes relaxation, improves circulation, reduces tension, stress, and fatigue, and even decreases the risk of injury, all while making you feel better naturally!

STRETCHING TIPS

Another benefit of stretching is that if done regularly, it helps condition your muscles for exercise, making them function more efficiently. Here are some stretching tips to keep in mind:

  1. Before you put your muscles to use, warm them up! Jumping jacks, jogging in place, or a bike ride around the neighborhood is a great way to do that.
  2. Bouncing or bobbing while holding a stretch is not advised. Simply holding the stretch is effective, and incorrect movements can lead to injury.
  3. Each stretch should be performed in a slow and controlled manner, and held for 20-30 seconds.
  4. Stretching should make you slightly uncomfortable, but not cause pain. You should feel the stretch in your muscle, not in your joints. Be aware of what your body is telling you while stretching, and if you feel pain, stop the movement and give us a call.
  5. To keep your muscles evenly stretched on both sides of your body, be sure to stretch both sets of limbs in the same way.
