Infant and pediatric massage is a specialized form of touch that causes a lot of dissension.  However, human infants thrive when touched.  In many cultures, newborn are massaged on a regular basis. Their extremities and core are vigorously stroked and then they are wrapped or swaddled. Those that follow this custom find that infants that received regular massages sleep more soundly, have faster motor development, and are calmer. Infant massage is also said to assist with the critical weight gain for premature infants. Another benefit is for the mother. Mothers that experience postpartum depression that massage their babies on a regular basis lessen their own depression and are more likely to play with their children regularly.
