The Plant Plus Diet Solution

This week I want to talk about a brand new book by my admired and revered friend, Dr. Joan Borysenko. It’s called The Plant Plus Diet Solution: Personalized Nutrition for Life. I wrote an endorsement for an earlier book of hers that couldn’t be truer today:

“Joan Borysenko is the smartest woman I’ve ever known. I urge you to drink in her wisdom.” If you don’t already know the work of Dr. Joan, you’ll find this new book a fabulous introduction. Joan is an internationally known speaker in integrative medicine and the mind-body connection. She has a doctorate in cell biology from Harvard Medical School and is a licensed clinical psychologist. She’s the New York Times best-selling author of many books as well as a journalist and radio personality. And, it goes without saying that she is a great person and a great friend.”

The Plant Plus Diet Solution speaks to all of us who are trying to figure out what best serves our health in today’s brave new world of genetically modified foods, escalating health crises (obesity, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer’s), and contradictory nutritional guidelines—not to mention the clash-of-the-titans media blitz for our food dollars among packaged, processed and “fast” food producers. What should we eat? With fascinating discussions of the science behind our nutritional needs, Dr. Joan uncovers the bottom line for us—there is no one-size-fits-all diet. We need to look inside, experiment, and figure out exactly what foods work best for us—each of us. It is our responsibility, and also our sacred mission, to take care of the unique bodies we have been given.

As Joan says, it is also about our responsibility to our planet:

“What’s true for us in terms of our personal health and the health of our economy is also true for our planet. It’s in crisis. I’m not an alarmist, but it’s ostrich-like to dispute the facts. Earth truly is at a tipping point. Global warming; increasing pollution; and agricultural practices that deplete the soil, poison the water, and kill our beneficial bacterial allies (and eventually us) are hard to ignore. What we do to the Earth we do to ourselves. Our elders, who are succumbing to an epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease, are like canaries in the mine. So are the increased number of autistic children. Are you overweight? Diabetic? Depressed? Anxious? You’re a canary in the mine as well.

Something has gone terribly wrong with our national health and well-being, and it’s high time for the tide to turn. The PlantPlus Diet—a scientific, metabolically personalized, whole-foods approach to health—is also a solution to some of these pressing problems. If as consumers we refuse to eat junk foods, genetically modified foods, pesticide-riddled produce, and products made from factory-farmed animals, we’ll be healthier and so will our precious children. Furthermore, eating the PlantPlus way—personalized for your own unique metabolism—is empowering. It’s a step you can take to ensure that you, your children, our children’s children, and the Earth herself endure and prosper for the good of us all.”

Here’s a final weigh-in from Dr. Larry Dossey, author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters.

“The Plant Plus Diet Solution: Personalized Nutrition for Life is the best book in years on nourishing not just your body but your mind and spirit as well. This is a superb example of the integration of cutting-edge science, psychology, and common sense. If the endless stream of diet books makes you want to run in the other direction, The PlantPlus Diet Solution is for you.” I never thought I’d see a book on nutrition that is fun to read, but here it is. Bravo, Dr. Borysenko, for reminding us that the kitchen can be a sacred site.

Namaste, Wayne
