Back to School Tips

The new school season is officially here and it feels like the world is waking up after the efforts to quarantine. Although different counties may be in different phases, many kids are going back to the classroom. Beyond maintaining a sense of patience and flexibility (it’s important for your mental health, too!), here are some of our tips to help keep your kids safe during the school year.

Provide Your Own School Supplies

Unless absolutely necessary, avoid relying on communal school supplies…yes, even when offered. Ensure that your child has their own set of classroom supplies and discuss boundaries for sharing.

Don’t Send Your Kid to School Sick

Parents, please don’t send your kids to school if they appear to be symptomatic of illness. Virtual learning? No problem. In-class learning? Keep them at home. Try to develop a routine for checking their temperature and if they have a fever, they should remain home. If information hasn’t been shared already, reach out to your child’s school to find out more about their sick policies and rules for the school year.

Hand Sanitizer & Hand Washing

It has been stressed for months, but one of the best ways to combat COVID-19 is to wash your hands and wash them frequently. Be sure your child knows how to properly wash their hands (click here for some tips) and that they wash them frequently. If hand washing isn’t available, hand sanitizer should be alcohol-based and 60% or higher. Communal situations may not have handwashing stations available, so it’s important that your child has easy access to their own hand sanitizer.

Face Masks

Face masks are mandated in many counties. Ensure that your child has a few spares with them in case of contamination or damage. Cloth face coverings are recommended by the CDC as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the covering sneezes, coughs, talks, or raises their voice. Cloth face coverings are an example of source control.
